innocence of landscape – an archaeological search for traces

An artistic project about tourism, history, memory

The photographs of Josep Planas reveal a new, innocent and at the same prosperous tourism. However, landscape is never innocent; landscape has a historical connotation.

Based on Josep Plana’s photographs, I am interested in making visible the layers of hidden history, especially the history of German emigrants to Mallorca in the 1930s.

For this purpose, I photographed historical locations in Palma, Cala Ratjada, Pollença or Sa Coma in their current state, where German emigrants had sought refuge and were persecuted by the German Nazis, in collaboration with the Franco dictatorship, after the defeat of the Republicans in Sa Coma in 1936.

I try to create an overarching subjective context in the form of an archive consisting of index cards – using documents from the Planas archive, my own photographs taken on site and historical photographs.

The project is created thanks to the Art Investigation Programme of the Casa Planas Archive in Palma de Mallorca in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Barcelona.

Ein künstlerisches Projekt über Tourismus, Geschichte, Erinnerung

Die Fotografien von Josip Planas zeigen einen unverfänglichen und prosperierenden Tourismus, der die Historizität der Landschaft nicht erahnen läßt. Landschaft ist jedoch nie unschuldig, Landschaft ist historisch konnotiert.

Ausgehend von den Fotografien Josip Planas interessiert es mich, die Schichten der verborgenen Geschichte sichtbar zu machen, insbesondere der Geschichte der deutschen Emigranten auf Mallorca in den 1930er Jahren,.

Dazu habe ich historische Schauplätze in Palma, Cala Ratjada, Pollenca oder Sa Coma in ihrem aktuellen Zustand fotografiert, an denen deutsche Emigranten Zuflucht gesucht hatten und nach der Niederlage der Republikaner 1936 in Sa Coma von den deutschen Nationalsozialisten, in Kollaboration mit den Franquisten, verfolgt wurden.

Ich versuche in Form eines assoziativen Archivs, bestehend aus reproduzierten Karteikarten, einen übergreifenden subjektiven Kontext herzustellen – anhand von Dokumenten aus dem Planas-Archiv, eigenen Fotografien vor Ort sowie historischen Aufnahmen.
